Deep green, glossy lance-shaped leaves standing upright on firm pseudostems, free of brown spots or yellowing. At the base, firm green pods and small white-purple flowers on clean panicle stems. The rhizome should be cream-colored and firm, never mushy or dark.
Small (1–2 cm), distinctly three-sided (trigonal), smooth-skinned, green when mature. They grow on low trailing stems at the base of the plant — not the tall leafy stalks. Each has 3 chambers with 5–7 seeds each. Cracking one releases an unmistakable sweet, spiced-citrus fragrance.
Up to 15 feet (4.5 m) in its natural forest habitat. In home gardens it typically reaches 6–10 feet; in a 12–14 inch pot usually 4–6 feet. Each pseudostem lives 2–3 years before the rhizome replaces it with new shoots.
A perennial tropical herb (Elettaria cardamomum) in the ginger family, native to the Western Ghats of Kerala, southern India. Grows 6–15 feet from a spreading rhizome and produces aromatic green seed pods with a productive lifespan of 10–15 years.
Native to the moist evergreen forests of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu — the Western Ghats, historically called the “Cardamom Hills.” Traded for over 3,000 years across the ancient world. Today Guatemala is the largest producer, followed by India and Sri Lanka.
Edible and mildly aromatic — used floating in herbal teas and as delicate garnishes on desserts and beverages in parts of South India and Sri Lanka. Rarely found in markets, mostly accessible near growing regions.
Used primarily as natural food wrappers in South Indian cooking — fish, rice, and sweets are wrapped and steamed in the leaves. Also used in some traditional handicrafts and Ayurvedic preparations.
10–15 years under good conditions. Individual pseudostems live 2–3 years each before being replaced by new shoots from the rhizome. Peak production falls between years 4–8.
Technically a fruit — the green pod is a capsule. Inside are the seeds (15–20 per pod), the primary aromatic spice. The plant also produces edible flowers before the pods form.
