Doodh elaichi — warm milk infused with green cardamom — has been a South Asian bedtime ritual for generations. That cultural history is genuine and doesn’t need a clinical trial to be valuable as a comforting habit. The problem is what happens when wellness content turns that tradition into a scientific-sounding claim: “cardamom tea calms your nervous system through GABA modulation,” stated as settled fact, with no link to an actual study in humans.

We searched the available research — PubMed, PMC, and the specific studies most “cardamom for sleep” articles trace back to — and sorted every claim into one of four evidence tiers, from directly proven in humans down to traditional use only. That is a reasonable thing to do, with the right expectations. Doodh elaichi is a low-risk, traditional bedtime drink with no documented sedative interactions for most healthy adults. The plausible mechanisms (mild relaxation aroma, gut-settling effect, the ritual of a warm drink before bed, and milk’s general sleep-quality association) are each individually reasonable even without a cardamom-specific human trial. Treat it as a comforting, low-risk bedtime ritual rather than a clinically proven sleep treatment, and see a doctor if you have ongoing insomnia.

Based on what’s publicly published, yes. Saffron’s active compound safranal has been tested in a double-blind, placebo-controlled human trial lasting six weeks, with participants showing measurable sleep-quality improvements. That is a meaningfully stronger evidence position than cardamom currently has, which rests on one animal study. This doesn’t mean cardamom is ineffective — it means saffron’s claim is backed by a study design (human RCT) that cardamom’s claim is not, yet.
